Certified Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy in Greenville, SC
Healing trauma, fostering Self-leadership, and building emotional resilience through IFS therapy with licensed and certified psychotherapist Jennifer Massey, LISW-CP.

What is Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy?
Developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an evidence-based, psychospiritual model for personal growth, relational health, and psychotherapy. Drawing from foundational psychological theories such as family systems, client-centered therapy, and psychodynamic theory, IFS offers a multidimensional approach to understanding and transforming the human experience.
IFS has repeatedly demonstrated effectiveness in reducing severe psychological and physiological symptoms such as nightmares, chronic pain, self-harm, and addictions.

Core Concept: Parts Work & Self-Leadership
At the heart of IFS is the belief that humans inherently possess inner resources capable of addressing every problem they face. These resources are accessed through the Self, the core being of a person. The primary work of IFS is to build and repair relationships between the Self and the protective Parts of the personality. As these relationships mature, healing and integration occur, and individuals are able to respond to life’s challenges from a centered and resilient place.

How IFS Helps with Trauma, Anxiety, Depression, and Relationship Challenges
IFS is particularly effective in treating trauma, anxiety, and depression by identifying and working with Parts that carry burdens beyond their capacity. As internal relationships develop, these Parts can revise their roles, release their burdens, and rest without losing their protective function.
In relationships, IFS helps individuals tend to their own vulnerabilities, allowing for healthier connections that are not based on dependency. This results in more freedom, accountability, and mutual care in both intimate and community dynamics.
Why Choose IFS Therapy?
A Natural Path to Healing

IFS is effective because it was organically developed by observing how the mind naturally heals itself. Certified IFS therapists are trained to facilitate this innate process. As clients repeat and expand on the internal steps of healing, the transformation becomes more accessible and sustainable.

How IFS Therapy Works
Inside a Typical IFS Session
IFS therapy is a structured process that encourages people to relate to themselves to unlock natural healing. Clients enter therapy with varying degrees of readiness, and it’s not uncommon to spend time undoing misconceptions about how the mind works and what therapy should look like. As clients deepen their focus on their inner dialogue, a natural shift occurs, the therapist becomes a supportive presence while the real work happens internally, following a process like this:
IFS Steps and Framework-
Find, Focus, Flesh Out, Feel Toward, Befriend, and Fears

Therapist begins and maintains Self leadership and welcomes the client’s Self energy. As the client brings up their concerns the six Fs unfold: first, find the trailhead to follow, then, focus and feel the protective parts involved, next, flesh out the parts story and protective roles at play, introduce the part to Self energy, last, befriend the protectors, and address their fears and concerns to allow for access to the vulnerable parts, pushed out from daily life. There is often a natural shift of attention when clients focus more on the conversation happening inwardly than on the therapist. Once protectors have relaxed, they give consent to begin working with the vulnerables. Working with vulnerables has a different process; first, make secure connection between the client’s Self and the vulnerable part, next, Self takes time to understand the vulnerable’s story, position and burden, a natural trust builds between Self and the vulnerable allowing deeper witnessing of the part’s stored experience, last, the vulnerable begins to feel a freedom and can choose a way to be unburdened. Often parts choose to reorient from the isolated past to Self led present, or to reparent or redo the painful experience, when unburdening is complete the process concludes with restoring life-giving qualities to the part, reorienting the unburdened part, and integrating the changes into overall awareness.

Individual Therapy vs. Group IFS Work
The IFS process remains consistent whether in individual or group sessions. Group work offers added energy and collective support, with each participant receiving dedicated time to explore their own trailheads. In individual sessions, clients often move more deeply or cover multiple areas of focus.

FAQs About IFS Therapy
Who is IFS therapy for?
IFS is for anyone: individuals, couples, families, or communities who seek to improve their inner and relational lives and become more resilient during hardships.

How many sessions do I need?
Some clients experience transformational shifts in a single session, while others engage in longer therapeutic processes. The duration is influenced by the client’s prior therapy experience, mental availability during the session, and the individual’s self care process between sessions.

Is IFS effective for trauma?
IFS was developed for treating complex trauma and has since become a leading therapy for traumatic disorders. It follows a natural inner flow for healing, leverages the client’s own internal resources, and points out the choice points for the client to decide the direction.

How is IFS different from traditional therapy?
While IFS incorporates insights from many therapeutic approaches, it differs from advice-driven or solution-oriented counseling. IFS is centered on the idea that the client’s Self holds the best wisdom for their healing and the therapist’s job is to help them access it.
